Kinetic Workshops with Ormlie Community Association

"It was great that the children could link the event to the banners for Caithness Arts Week up in the town.  With the funding that we had we were able to introduce a new medium to our regular children, many of whom said it was the best workshop we'd ever done!"

Louise Allan, Ormlie Community Association

David Graham Scot - Detox or Die.

All Star Factory. 23rd September 2006

" Documentary filmmaker David G Scott introduced his hard-hitting autobiographical work, Detox or Die, to an enthusiastic crowd in Thurso's All-Star Factory. After the screening Scott explained other aspects of the film and the complexities of the addict lifestyle. Various young people, who came with the Pultneytown People's Project, were especially interested in questioning the filmmaker on his experiences and how he'd turned his life around. A great educational event that raised money towards a mental health charity in Wick"

David Graham Scott

KINETIC KRAFTS AND METALLIC MODELS, Ormlie Centre, Thurso. 18th - 21st September 2006.  Followed by art exhibition in Thurso Library then HomeAid's shop in Princes Street.

Caithness Arts Week last week saw the Community Partners Programme (CPP) in Ormlie hosting art workshops for children aged 5 – 14 years. The workshops involved discussing renewable energy and energy saving and the children basing their artwork on these themes.

The children were asked to comment on the workshops which saw them produce Viking longships, windmills, trees for the Wick District Heating Scheme, solar panels like the ones on some of the houses in Ormlie and models of wave devices that have been tested in Orkney. “Metal work was lethal!” said Nathan (8yrs). Gordon (11yrs) said, “At first I thought it would be boring but it’s been fun. More people should be doing it! My art work has solar power, windmills, trees and Pelamis which is a wave energy machine.“ Natasha (11yrs) commented that, “It was the best art project so far!” and Kayleigh (10yrs) said,” It was really good, was fun, and I learned what energy is.” Arlene (10yrs) said, “I now know that I have to switch things off to save energy.”

The work is now being exhibited in Thurso Library until Saturday 21st October, it will then be exhibited in HomeAid’s shop in Princes Street. HomeAid kindly donated items from their shop for re-use in the children’s artwork. Other materials for re-use were supplied by “Arts in Motion” (Evanton) and North Highland College and the new metallic materials and equipment were supplied with funding from Caithness Arts.

Ormlie Community Association’s CPP is hoping to attract more children to their well-supported and varied children’s and young people’s groups that are free of charge to participants apart from the drama sessions which cost £1.00. Anyone wishing for more information can contact Sue Rainbow, the CPP co-ordinator, at OCA’s office, 108 Marr Terrace, Thurso, Tel: 891789, email ormliecpp@tiscali.co.uk
